Power gouging electrode
Power gouging electrode
Manual metal arc gouging (MMA) electrodes can be used on the same power source as welding, gouging or cutting, simply by changing the electrode type.
Unlike MMA welding, where a stable weld puddle needs to be maintained, gouging electrodes force the melt away from the arc area or zone to remove the molten metal and leave the area clean without breaking the actual metal of the workpiece. The electrodes are specially formulated with thick flux coatings that generate a high arc force with a strong gas flow. Just like in MMA.
Arc welding when gouge is formed between the electrode tip and the workpiece.
Compared to alternative gouging methods, MMA gouging removes metal at lower rates and leaves an inferior gouged surface.
This method is more convenient as one can use the same power source and switch between gouging and welding electrodes.
