Cylinder honing tool
Cylinder honing tool
The 1-piece cylinder honing tool, designed specifically for engine cylinders and a ball-type construction, is designed for precision honing applications. This tool ensures optimum performance when held securely in a collet, chuck or similar holding device.
Features
- Secure Clamping Mechanism: Ensure precise honing by securely positioning the Flex-Hone tool in a collet, chuck or similar holding device.
- Optimal Rod Length: Improve control and accuracy by using the shortest rod suitable for your application.
- Lubrication and continuous rotation: ensure a smooth honing process by coating the tool with lubricant, starting rotation before entry and maintaining it until complete withdrawal.
- Variable RPM Range: Adapt the tool to different spindle speeds, ranging from 60 to 1200 RPM. Smaller diameters require higher spindle speeds, with a recommended starting range of 500-800 RPM.
- Cutting Oil Requirement: Effectively manage heat, prevent tool loading and suspend removed materials by consistently using good quality cutting oil or honing fluid.
- Continuous Stroke Rate: Maintain a continuous stroke rate between 120 to 180 inches per minute for optimum honing. Speed up the final stroke if a 45° crosshatch finish is desired.
Specifications
- Diameter to RPM Relationship: Adjust spindle speeds based on tool diameter, with smaller diameters requiring higher speeds for efficient honing.
- Speed Experimentation: Users may need to experiment to find the optimum spindle speed for their specific application, with the recommended starting range provided.
- Maximum RPM Limitation: Avoid exceeding 1200 RPM during operation to prevent potential damage to the Flex-Hone tool.
- Heat Management and Material Suspension: Consistently use a high-quality cutting oil or honing fluid to manage heat, prevent tool loading, and suspend the material being removed.
- Honing Time Guidelines: Use the minimum honing time necessary to achieve the required finish, with an average honing time ranging from 10-25 seconds or 5-15 strokes.
- Cylinder Cleaning Procedure: After honing, clean the cylinder using hot, soapy water and a cleaning brush. Dry the cylinder and continue to wipe with a lint-free cloth coated with light oil or mineral spirits until the cloth remains clean.
